Holy City Goes Up For Sale
Entire Town Offered At $11 Million
HOLY CITY, Calif. -- It's one of three places in the world called Holy City, and it's now for sale.
Holy City, Calif., is on the Santa Clara County side of Highway 17 at the Redwood Estates exit. Most commuters pass by it without noticing.
The entire 150-acre ghost town is for sale with an asking price of $11 million.
Holy City was established in 1919 by William E. Riker as a commune where disciples were expected to turn over all their belongings. In exchange, they were given room and board.
The property is owned by three retired contractors who bought it with the intention of turning the land into a park.
Realtor Jim Miller said this is the first time he's tried to sell a whole town.
"This would be my first experience. I've sold a lot of unique type property's -- ranches, old units. I've sold art buildings, retail shopping centers, a lot of the big things, but this is my first experience on a town," Miller said.
In the early 1900s, there were 300 people living in Holy City. Now there are just three -- one at night and two during the day.
The other two holy cities are in Jerusalem and Mecca.
